In Faith in the Fire, Pastor Steve Linton continues the Faith Even in Crisis series with the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3. Faced with the choice between bowing to King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image or being thrown into a blazing furnace, the three men refuse to compromise their faith~even without knowing how God will respond.
Their declaration in Daniel 3:16–18 reveals a deeper kind of faith: God is able to deliver them, “but even if He does not,” they still will not bow. True faith isn’t a transaction based on God giving us the outcome we want. It is trusting His character and remaining obedient even when there are no guarantees.
Their courage in the furnace was built through smaller acts of obedience long before the crisis arrived. Through Daniel 1, along with examples from Acts 4 and Esther, we’re reminded that faithfulness in the small things prepares us to stand firm when the pressure becomes greater. Jesus Himself demonstrates the ultimate surrender when He prays, “Not my will, but yours be done.”
When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are thrown into the furnace, God doesn’t prevent the fire~He meets them in it. Isaiah 43:2 reminds us that when we walk through the fire, God will be with us. The promise isn’t that every crisis will be removed or end the way we hope. The promise is that we will never walk through the fire alone.
Faith in the fire means believing God is able, trusting Him even if the outcome is different than we hoped, and refusing to bow when the pressure is on.
